Greensboro, N.C. (June 20, 2008) – Piedmont Pharmaceuticals LLC, a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on parasitology and drug delivery systems for human and companion animal use, has appointed Tom Sloan to its board of directors.

A long-time healthcare start-up investor, Sloan served for three decades as president and chairman of Southern Optical Company, an ophthalmic lens manufacturer and distributor.  He fills a seat vacated by Lanty Smith, who was recently appointed chairman and interim CEO of Wachovia Corp.

"While we will certainly miss Lanty's leadership and vision, we are pleased to welcome Tom to our board," said Piedmont Pharmaceuticals CEO Roland Johnson.  "His deep industry knowledge and rich investment and management experience will benefit our company tremendously."

In addition to his work with Piedmont Pharmaceuticals, Sloan is also a director of Bank of North Carolina, Precision Fabrics Group, AgData, and health-related companies Bioptigen and Mediwave Star Technologies.  He also volunteers his time with several non-profit organizations, including the University of Rochester, the Jewish Foundation of Greensboro and Triad Stage, a professional theater group.

Sloan joins current directors Luther H. Hodges Jr., Andy Jane and Kenneth "Bill" Yates, D.V.M.
